A Scientific Conference at The Shed

Designing an environment for knowledge exchange

Private Client (Undisclosed)
The Shed, New York · 2024

MODA Role

Creative Direction · Spatial Design · Fabrication & Production
(Authorship established while leading creative direction within a producing agency context)

Context

The event brought together leading voices from the scientific community for a private, invitation-only conference focused on research, dialogue, and long-term impact.

Hosted at The Shed—a venue known for its cultural and architectural flexibility—the environment needed to support deep engagement rather than spectacle, balancing intellectual rigor with spatial clarity.

Due to the confidential nature of the program, the client remains undisclosed.

Scope & Contribution

MODA led the creative direction and spatial design for the conference environment, shaping the space as a focused, distraction-free platform for exchange.

The work included:

  • Developing the overall spatial concept and environmental tone

  • Designing an architectural framework that supported presentations, discussion, and informal gathering

  • Prioritizing legibility, acoustics, and comfort within a high-performance cultural venue

  • Managing fabrication, production, and onsite execution

Rather than emphasizing visual excess, the design focused on supporting content—allowing ideas, not graphics or technology, to remain central.

Design Intent

The environment was designed to feel deliberate and restrained.

Material choices, lighting, and spatial organization were calibrated to reduce noise—both literal and visual—creating conditions conducive to focus, conversation, and sustained attention.

In a moment when many events prioritize stimulation, this conference prioritized clarity.

Outcome

The conference operated as a calm, highly functional environment—supporting rigorous discussion and meaningful interaction throughout the program.

By treating the space as intellectual infrastructure rather than an event backdrop, the design reinforced the seriousness of the subject matter and the importance of the conversations taking place within it.

Attribution

This project was produced by Empire Entertainment. MODA’s role reflects creative authorship, spatial design leadership, and production oversight established during that engagement.
