Context
Following the success of Skype’s SXSW 2012 presence, the brand sought a traveling platform that could showcase its products across multiple events—without rebuilding or redesigning for each appearance.
Rather than creating a temporary activation, the goal was to design a durable, mobile environment that functioned as both a product demonstration space and a social lounge—capable of moving between cities, audiences, and cultural contexts.
Scope & Contribution
MODA (operating at the time as reMADE LLC) conceived, designed, and delivered Skypestream—a fully customized Airstream trailer designed as a furniture-grade, technology-integrated brand environment.
Working in collaboration with Pereira O'Dell, our work included:
-
Concept development for a mobile, repeatable brand platform
-
Architectural and interior design of the Airstream
-
Design and fabrication of a handcrafted central bar as the spatial anchor
-
Integration of fold-down exterior elements to extend the experience outward
-
Custom technology integration to support live product demonstrations and interaction
-
Full production oversight and delivery
The interior was designed with the same care as a permanent lounge—prioritizing material quality, craft, and human scale.
Design Intent
Skypestream was designed as a product-environment hybrid—part vehicle, part interior, part experiential tool.
Rather than leaning into novelty, the design emphasized:
-
Furniture-grade materials and detailing
-
Flexibility across different event types
-
Durability for repeated deployment
-
Seamless integration of technology into a warm, approachable setting
The result was an environment that felt intentional and inviting, not promotional.
Longevity & Deployment
Skypestream debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in 2012 and continued to travel to major events for several years thereafter.
Its long lifespan underscored the project’s core premise: designing once, and using often—a principle that continues to inform MODA’s approach to sustainability and systems thinking.
Outcome
Skypestream became a recognizable and highly adaptable brand asset for Skype—demonstrating how thoughtful design could replace disposable activations with long-term experiential infrastructure.
The project further established MODA’s ability to operate at the intersection of design, architecture, and technology, while delivering work built to endure.
